E. Guigal

Eye: Ruby red with red vermillion tints. Nose: Small red fruits, blackberry and floral violet aromas. Intensely aromatic, powerful but full of finesse. Palate: Supple with balance between the finesse of the aromas and an explosive richness due to the concentration of the wine. Greatly expressive of the terroir. Overall: A feminine wine with voluptuous silky texture and intense aromas. Ageing potential: 20 years. Food and wine matching: Exceptional wine, exceptional food, pheasant, partridge.

Wine Spectator

An amazing effort for the vintage, with black cherry compote and hoisin sauce notes layered with mineral, black tea, vanilla bean and dark cocoa. Long, supersilky finish is carried by fine-grained tannins. Drink now through 2021.

Score: 94. —James Molesworth, October 15, 2006.

Wine Advocate

The 2002 Cote Rotie La Mouline offers bacon fat, litchi nut, peach, and sweet cherry characteristics in an elegant, medium-bodied, lighter style than normal. There is plenty of substance in this seductive, Pinot Noir-like effort. It should drink well for a decade.

Score: 90-92. —Robert Parker, February 2006.

International Wine Cellar

($240) Bright red. Intensely perfumed aromas of cherry and redcurrant, accented by cinnamon and dried flowers; smells downright Burgundian. Silky, sweet and mineral-driven red fruit flavors offer impressive energy and focus, with just a suggestion of tannin on the back end. I find this really elegant today.

Score: 90. —Josh Raynolds, January 2007.
