Silvio Grasso

Deep ruby color. Black cherry, currant and dark chocolate on the nose. Hints of violet and liquorice. Rich, velvety, well structured, with dry, firm tannins.

Wine Enthusiast

Barolo Ciabot Manzoni is a tremendous wine with rich notes of cherry, vanilla and chocolate. Yes, it's a bold, modern wine but there's no denying the quality and beauty here. Give it more time in the cellar to allow those oak notes to integrate and give more prominence to the sophisticated aromas of wild berries, mineral, cola and licorice that are generously present.

Score: 94. —Monica Larner, December 01, 2010.

International Wine Cellar

Deep red-ruby. Musky, balsamic aromas of minerals and smoke. Broader, sweeter and suppler than the Bricco Luciani, with the balsamic cedary quality carrying through in the mouth. This tightens up on the finish, but finishes with very good persistence in spite of its somewhat oaky tannins. No shortage of volume here, but this wine will need cellaring. Like the Bricco Luciani, this had been bottled the week before I tasted it. (The other 2006s had not yet been bottled.)

Score: 90. —Stephen Tanzer, December 2009.

Wine Spectator

A little awkward at this stage, displaying loads of sweet black cherry and blackberry fruit that yields to stiff, raspy tannins. The tannins are a tad drying, but I like the fruit, so be patient. Long finish. Best from 2013 through 2028. 250 cases made.

Score: 90. —Bruce Sanderson, February 28, 2011.

Wine Advocate

The 2006 Barolo Ciabot Manzoni shows a bit more richness than the Bricco Luciani, along with a profile of dark red fruit, menthol, spices and sweet French oak. Here, too, I am concerned the wine may not have the fruit to stand up to the structural components. Over time the tannins are likely to become increasingly prominent as the fruit fades. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022.

Federico Grasso is often one of the last producers to bottle his entire range, so I was only able to taste his Bricco Luciani and Ciabot Manzoni, which happen to be the Barolos he is best known for.

Score: 90. —Antonio Galloni, February 2010.
