Roagna Barolo Pira 2013The 2013 Barolo Pira is dark and powerful to its core. Deceptive in its mid-weight structure, the 2013 is all nerves and muscle. Iron, blood, smoke, cedar, smoke and licorice give the 2013 much of its super-distinctive flavor profile. In the glass, the 2013 is wonderfully deep and exotic, with layers of dimension that open up effortlessly over time. Readers will have to be patient with the 2013, but it is hugely promising. Sadly, prices for the Roagna wines have gone up dramatically in recent years.

Tommasi Poggio Al Tufo Cabernet Sauvignon 2012The Poggio al Tufo property is located in in Pitigliano, a historical Etruscan city situated about an hour north of Rome, in the province of Grosseto. The vineyards are in the Alta Maremma, lying approximately 1,000 feet above sea level, and are characterized by soils that are very rich in tufo, a particular type of volcanic rock. The Mediterranean sea, lying just 15 miles away, prevents any drastic temperature variations and provides a warm, stable microclimate for the vines. The Tommasi family has replanted the area with selected clones of both indigenous and international grape varieties.

Allegrini Palazzo della Torre 2014The wine is made using an innovative take on the 'ripasso' technique. Most of the grapes are vinified at harvest time, while the rest are set aside to partially dry. In January, the wine blended with the juice from the raisined grapes undergoes a second fermentation. The vineyard surrounds Villa della Torre, a splendid masterpiece of Renaissance architecture now owned by the family, and produces a full-bodied red wine that has an ageing potential of at least ten years. The blend is the historic combination of Corvina and Rondinella with the addition of a small quantity of Sangiovese. This wine is a deep ruby red and easily pairs with various Italian dishes, above all risottos, especially those flavoured with saffron, porcini mushrooms and pork; classic dishes such as pasta with Amatriciana and Carbonara sauces, baked lasagna, gnocchi with gorgonzola cheese and walnuts; grilled meats and roasts.
