Ruby red, tending to garnet with aging. Perfume is intense red berry, with a hint of flint. Full and persistent, with velvety and stong tannic flavor. The vine is cultivated in such a way as to produce about a kilo of grapes per plant. The grapes are harvested by hand and left in their skins to ferment for about two weeks. After fermentation the wine is matured in oak casks for two years.

Di Filippo's 2005 Sagrantino di Montefalco is a big, burly offering loaded with dark fruit, leather, spices, and earthiness. The wine's fruit and sheer density, while admirable, are unfortunately compromised by aromas and flavors that aren't perfectly clean. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2013.
