These wines flaunt a finesse and site-specific character that belies the powerful core lurking below. Winemaking is overseen by consultant Attilio Pagli, who uses a minimum of new oak, allowing old vine character to shine through with aged plummy fruits, saddle leather and tobacco notes. The superb, rare Rosso is a smaller-scaled and more approachable version of the Brunello. Less than 100 cases are imported to the entire U.S. each year of the two wines combined - quantities are extremely limited. To control diseases and insects, Scopetone uses low environmental impact products including organic and mineral-based fertilizers and sulfur and copper-based products. No herbicides are used. Depending on the period of the year, grass cover is left on the rows between the vines. Low doses of SO2 are used to preserve the wines.

Wine SpectatorRustic, raisiny character on the nose. Full-bodied and a bit chewy and funky, but interesting. Best after 2009.
