A friend claps you on the back and hands you a bowl crafted from juniper proclaiming “wassail!” “Drink hail” you chorus with the rest of the group, taking a gulp and passing it on. Treats of olive tapenade and plums with cinnamon are shared as the merriment continues into the night.

Swiftly followed by red currant jam and black pepper, the supple mouthfeel fills out this full-bodied wine. Toasty coconut and spicy oak from the American oak heightens the dense fruit, and the wine finishes with stellar tannins softened by just a hint sweet pipe tobacco. Displaying a bright ruby red color, this wine has a fruity nose of plums and raspberries complemented with herbal notes. The first palate shows supple tannins with a balanced acidity that is the secret of its freshness. Notes of crisp red fruits fill the mouth, with a soft texture and a long finish. This is a pleasant wine, ideal to pair with various dishes, from red meats to pasta or grilled vegetables.
Broadbent Malbec 2009 1LArgentina has near perfect conditions for the cultivation of grapes. Hot days allow for fully ripened grapes and cool nights provide complexity. Desert-like conditions mean the vineyards are typically healthy and need minimal intervention - most of Argentina has never been touched by Phyloxera. Rainfalls of 200mm (8inches) per year mean that irrigation is important. An elaborate canal system, dating back to the Pre-Colombian Incan Empire, distributes mountain spring water from the Andes to the many vineyards of Mendoza. Soils are mostly alluvial clay, sand and rock, low in organic material, which help naturally control vine vigor and yield and provides excellent drainage. The location of Mendoza in the high altitude Andean foothills with vineyards averaging between 3,000 and 5,000 feet above sea level is an important part of what makes this region unique.
