From our estate vineyard overlooking the quaint town of St. Helena, Winemaker Craig MacLean has crafted this wine. Merlot, cabernet franc, and petit verdot are blended with the cabernet sauvignon, adding nuance and elegance in the style of premier cru Bordeaux. "This wine is all Spring Mountain District pedigree," says MacLean. Impressions of black cherry, cassis, baking bread, butterscotch and a hint of black pepper are found in this young, full-bodies, rich wine. The balance and structure of the wine indicate drinking well over the next 8-10 years.

Wine EnthusiastA big, dense, sturdy wine, rich in tannins and with the structure to age. It's rather muted now, but buried deep is a solid core of blackberry, cassis, herb and olive flavors that turn up on the finish. Best after 2006.

Wine AdvocateThe 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain possesses good density as well as richness, but elevated tannin, medium body, and a certain angularity. It comes across like a young Bordeaux from a lean year, which may not be a compliment in California. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the aromas and flavors, but not the austerity. We'll see how it ages, but it appears to be somewhat of a gamble.
